February 17 – Gregory Wilson Lecture

“Things I carry and use” — The Tour

From close-up to stand-up, there’s something for everyone.

Just like the title reveals, Greg’s lecture uses things that fit in his pockets and are found around him, ever-ready for spur-of-the-moment astonishments.

Continuing on his impromptu work from “Off the Cuff” and “On the Spot”, Greg teaches how to convert everyday objects into devastating weapons of deception. The emphasis here is on ENTERTAINMENT.

Just because it’s called a lecture doesn’t mean it has to be dry and academic. You will experience a rip-roaring, laugh-out-loud, audience-involving show!

Time: 2pm 2:30pm
Location: Langford Firehall #2 (3205 Happy Valley Road) Intrepid Theatre, 1609 Blanshard St, Victoria, BC V8W 2J5
Price: $20 for members and $40 for non-members

Can-Am Lecture Series: Rudy Coby – November 18th

Just a brief reminder that the next lecture in the Can-Am Lecture Series will be Rudy Coby on Sunday, November 18th @ 2:00pm. It will be held at Langford Firehall #2. You read that correctly, a Sunday afternoon lecture!

The lecture is $40 to attend, but if you are a member-in-good-standing, you will get in at 50% off! That’s only $20! What a steal! 🙂 Membership certainly has its privileges.

If you’re unfamiliar with Rudy’s work, take a look at some of his work on YouTube at this link. And even if you don’t think it’s your style, it’s worth attending the lecture as you will always learn something or at minimum be entertained for an afternoon.

The next monthly meeting is only two days later on November 20th and you don’t want to hear about how awesome the lecture was at the meeting, whilst wishing you had gone.

Be there or be a dodecahedron!

November 18th Rudy Coby Lecture

Rudy Coby is the next Can-Am Lecture Series lecturer who will be visiting the Victoria Magic Circle. Please note that this lecture will happen on Sunday, November 18th instead of our usual Saturday because he’s performing at some gig in Mission the night before (Yes, I’m looking at you, Norden! 😉 ).

If you’re unfamiliar with Rudy’s work, read the promo below and see some of his work on YouTube at this link.

Even if you think it’s not your style, keep in mind it’s worth attending the lecture as you *will* learn something you can use and at minimum be entertained for an evening.

With that said, take it away, promo guy…

Rudy Coby, also known as “Labman”, is one of the most creative and bizarre comedic magicians working today.

In the early 1990s, Coby appeared in several small theatrical live shows, and on broadcast television, where he delivered two unforgettable specials, “Rudy Coby: Coolest Magician on Earth,” and “Rudy Coby: Ridiculously Dangerous.” He is known for delivering eclectic and original comedic performances, of which stage magic plays a large part. He also works closely with rock musician and film director Marilyn Manson.

In the mid-1990s, Coby and his troupe of illusionist comrades performed in the Gem Theatre in downtown Detroit for an unprecedented thirteen weeks, thanks to his impressive cult following, and overwhelmingly positive local media support.

After a hiatus of 14 years, Coby returned to performing in 2009, including a well-received twelve-week run at the Galaxy Theater at Valleyfair, a theme park in Minneapolis. In 2012, he performed on the YouTube episode of America’s Got Talent during its seventh season, but did not advance to the semifinals.

Currently a resident of Las Vegas, and member of the Magic Castle in Los Angeles, Rudy now joins the Can-Am Conjuring Lecture Series, as a finale to our 2018 season.

September 15th Daniel Garcia Lecture

Save the date! Daniel Garcia is lecturing for us on September 15th!

Time: 7pm
Location: Langford Firehall #2 (3205 Happy Valley Road)
Price: $20 for members and $40 for non-members

Daniel Garcia is a Texas based magician who is known for his creative approach to magic as well as his off-the-wall, casual performance style.

He is not only one of the most influential creators in the industry, but he is also one of the most sought-after consultants for television magic. He has been David Blaine’s head consultant for the past 6 years he has also consulted and created magic for almost every major magician today, including Cyril, David Copperfield, and Dynamo.

In 2005, with the help of magic legend Paul Harris, Daniel started production on a 3 volume DVD set that would soon become an instant classic among the magic community. With its collection of highly visual effects, and unusual techniques, The Daniel Garcia Project became a must-have for a new generation of magicians as well as seasoned professionals.

Several years later, in collaboration with Paul Harris and the Buck Twins Daniel released three additional volumes of the Project series, cementing his status as a creative force to be reckoned with.

For his new “Magician’s Only” lecture, Daniel will share many of his favorite effects, as well as lots of NEW material that has not been previously released. The lecture will also feature handlings of his newest commercial creation, Mint Box. A diabolical, practical, semi-automatic switching device and one of the cleanest and most organic products ever created, Mint Box fits comfortably in your pocket – ready to perform at a moment’s notice.

It is rare these days for Daniel to commit to a full lecture tour, opting instead for occasional convention appearances. We are honored to welcome him to the 2018 season of The Can-Am Conjuring Lecture Series.
