Below is a list of MYI Activities, and Mini Lecture Volunteers and the dates which they will be appearing.

THIS SECTION CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Meeting schedule to be posted soon.

  • The Lon Dingwell Trophy
  • The trophy, donated to the Young Magicians (SYM, but now MYI) by Lon Dingwell, will be presented to the young magician who delivers, according to the criteria below, the best magic performance:
  • 1. The trick or routine may be closeup platform OR stage. Note at this time the competition is not actually held ON a stage but in a large 24’x48’ meeting room, so you may want to leave your disappearing elephant at home!
  • 2. There must be a minimum of three performers for a valid competition.
  • 3. The winner will be decided by 3 adult magician judges, selected by the VMC’s MYI Committee.
  • 4. A list of judging criteria will be given to prospective competitors well before before the competition.
  • 5. The winner will be announced on the same day of the competition. The VMC’s MYI Committee will take care of inscribing the Trophy and arranging for a keeper for the winner and certificates for all participants.
  • JUDGES WILL BE MARKING ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA…
  • There is a MAXIMUM TIME LIMIT – Your act must NOT exceed 8 minutes –
  • 5% PENALTY will be taken off your score if you go over. There is no minimum time.
  • MOVEMENT – 20%
  • 1 Practice your Sleights, manipulation and secret moves, and how they are interspersed within your act.  Also, body movement, body language, carriage, even your manner of picking up/putting down of props are important in your ability to entertain as a magician.
  • PRESENTATION – 20%
  • 1 Try to ensure your act is ‘fluid’ from beginning to end – this you will attain with LOTS of practice, and working out the ‘bugs’ (parts that don’t seem fluid, or are lacking in ‘spark’ or ‘content’).
  • 2 Judges will look at your ability to recover if something goes wrong. Making mistakes is part of life – it is how you deal with mistakes that counts! – Therefore, you should work on ways to continue your ability to entertain; you might use a joke to deal with a blatant mishap, and you must learn to ignore small mistakes (not let it show on your face) because the audience will not notice these, provided you go on with the show without a faltering facial expression.
  • AUDIO ASPECTS: PATTER and or use of MUSIC/SOUND EFFECTS – 20%
  • 3 Diction, story line, use of significant language in patter, AND/OR choice of music/sound effects and ability to work your moves WITH your music… these are the audio aspects of your magic presentation, and are very important. Note, in terms of ‘sound’ there may be times in your act when ‘silence’ is required (ie, work with coins) and this is considered part of the audio .
  • AUDIENCE INTERACTION – 20%
  • 4 Judges will look at how you sustain the interest of your audience – how you interact with audience and/or volunteers with eye contact and/or verbal engagement (and OFCOURSE with acting and magic!)
  • ORIGINALITY – 10%
  • 5 Try to use distinct elements of originality in one, two or all aspects of your act such as concept, attire, props, patter and presentation. These are the qualities that make the presentation ‘stand out as your own’
  • VISUAL ASPECTS: THE LOOK OF ATTIRE and PROPS – 10%
  • 2 Appearance is important, but this does not mean you must be wearing a tuxedo! Simply ensure your attire is appropriate for the type of magician that you are and in terms of props you should ensure if they display as nicely as possible.
  • DESPITE ALL THE SERIOUS WORDS ABOVE, REMEMBER,YOU ARE AMONG FRIENDS, AND ABOVE ALL, HAVE FUN WHILE YOU ARE ENTERTAINING (ITS CONTAGIOUS!) AND THE AUDIENCE WILL HAVE FUN TOO!
